NIOSH Alert: Preventing Deaths and Injuries of Adolescent Workers (Summary)

  This NIOSH Alert identified several leading causes of adolescent accidents and deaths in the U.S. workforce and issued a list of recommendations for employers, parents, educators and adolescents to minimize the risks of adolescent injury and death. Jobs identified as especially hazardous to adolescent workers were those involving motor vehicles, heavy equipment, cooking appliances, and electrical equipment. Robbery related homicide was identified as a hazard for adolescents working in retail and service businesses. To prevent deaths and injuries among adolescent workers, NIOSH suggests that employers, parents, educators and adolescents be aware of federal and state child labor laws.
