Description:The proceedings of a conference on agricultural safety and health were presented. Included in this publication were speeches given by several participants on the potential for developing a national coalition, questions to guide the national agenda, medical intervention problems and opportunities, and issues that affect the national agenda. Papers were presented on the surveillance of agriculture related diseases, injuries, and hazards from a physician's viewpoint, the government's perspective, the consumers' perspective, as well as an agricultural safety perspective. Chemical and biological hazards associated with the agricultural industry such as airborne dusts, infectious diseases, pesticide exposure, and exposures to gases, liquids, vapors, and drugs were discussed by experts in the field of agricultural health and safety. Discussions were presented as well on mechanical and physical hazards in agriculture such as farm machinery and vehicles, electrical power, musculoskeletal hazards, and noise and stress. Conference sessions on interventions such as the protection of agricultural workers from hazards and the education of agricultural workers were included. The elements of a national agenda incorporating surveillance, research, and intervention were discussed as were actions for the future. [Description provided by NIOSH]
