  This evaluation was performed to provide up to date reference material on the mortality status of numerous occupational classifications in the state of Washington for the time period from 1950 through 1971. The evaluation demonstrated the usefulness of the Washington state death certificate in providing both occupational and cause of death information about the deceased. The results of this evaluation agreed quite well with the 1950 United States occupational mortality study and with the Registrar General's occupational mortality studies published for England and Wales. In the absence of population data, a proportional mortality ratio analysis yielded essentially the same information as the population based standardized mortality ratio used in the United States and British studies. Tailoring the occupational code to fit the occupations and industries present in the state of Washington and extending the analysis to include the entire age span gave information which would have otherwise been obscured.
