  This guide was presented to assist in providing a safe and healthy workplace in sawmills and planing mills. Safe practices and methods for correcting some of the more frequently encountered violations of the safety and health standards were described. It was not, however, intended to provide total information in all areas of compliance. Specific topics addressed in this guide included: conveyors, belts, rollers, lockout/tagout of equipment, materials handling equipment, log unloading, storage, sorting, log decks, debarking, buck sawing and drag sawing, log carriages, head rig, edgers, resaws, trimmer saws, planers, green chain, planer chain, chippers and hogs, kilns, saw sharpening, lumber piling and storage, and specific operations. Health and safety guidelines considered included health and safety program, employee training, occupational health, and power tools. Frequently violated regulations discussed included walking and working surfaces, standard guard rails, exits and exit markings, ventilation, environmental control, occupational noise exposure, hazardous materials, spray painting, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, sanitation, medical and first aid, fire protection, fire extinguishers, compressed air equipment, powered industrial trucks, hoists, machinery and machine guarding, hand and portable powered tools, welding, cutting, and brazing, and the National Electrical Code.
