Description:This guide was presented to assist in providing a safe and healthly workplace for establishments primarily engaged in scrap processing. Safe practices in the workplace and methods of correction for some of the more frequently encountered violations of the safety and health standards were provided. It was noted that this guide did not provide total information in all areas of compliance. Specific topics covered in this guide dealt with the health and safety program, reduction of unsafe acts and practices, the industry and its hazards, storage yards, machine guarding, good housekeeping, and safety rules for operating power tools. Also included were sections dealing with frequently violated regulations related to walking and working surfaces, exits and exit markings, occupational health and environmental control, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, general environmental controls, medical and first aid, fire protection, compressed air equipment, materials handling and storage, machinery and machine guarding, hand and portable powered tools, welding, cutting and brazing, and the National Electrical Code. Information was also included on recordkeeping requirements, checklists, information sources, NIOSH and OSHA Regional Offices, and standard hand signals for controlling overhead and gantry cranes.
