  This document summarized the NIOSH program plan for the fiscal year 1983. These plans have been developed with the aim of strengthening mechanisms to assure excellence in research and recommendations of the Institute, to focus scientific skills and resources on the more important diseases and injuries in the occupational sector, to facilitate expanded participation on the State and local levels to prevent work related health problems, and to improve the access of workers to the benefits of health care on the job. Projects were summarized in the following areas of interest: identification of occupational safety and health problems through surveillance and health hazard evaluations and technical assistance studies; evaluation of safety and health problems including lung disease, musculoskeletal injuries and disorders, cancer, traumatic deaths, amputations, fractures, eye losses, cardiovascular disease, reproductive effects, neurotoxic illness, noise induced hearing loss, dermatologic disorders, and psychological disorders; the control of occupational safety and health problems through the use of respirators, control systems, other personal protective equipment, sampling and analysis, and instrumental methods development; and the dissemination of occupational safety and health findings and recommendations through document development and dissemination and work force development.
