Description:Information contained in this booklet was designed to assist employers in training employees in the safe use of powder actuated tools. The hazards associated with the operation of such tools were described. Material was provided to be used as a guide in training users in the proper working procedures, equipment operation, and use of protective equipment. The responsibilities of the employee and employer relating to training requirements were outlined. While NIOSH and OSHA do not approve or certify training programs, compliance officers from OSHA will examine a facility for evidence that a training program is in place. Records must be kept relating to employee training. The records must indicate that the employee has received training in relation to the tasks he is being asked to perform and that the training he received will likely cover any hazards he might encounter during the execution of these tasks. The booklet included the following: the objective of training, a brief guide to the instructor, instructions to the applicant, the Powder Actuated Tool Manufacturers' Institute Test, instructions to examiners, steps in employee training, guide to the selection of tools and fasteners and power loads, safe operating practices, and employee/operator safety essentials. A listing of NIOSH and OSHA Regional Offices was included. [Description provided by NIOSH]
