Description:This guide was prepared for the purpose of assisting employers in the training of powered industrial truck operators so that the operators and bystanders will be safe and the requirements of OSHA will be met. A series of questions and answers was provided covering various aspects of powered truck operation such as the purpose of training, rented versus owned trucks, medical tests for drivers, operators who have had previous training elsewhere, company time for training, observation period of newly trained driver, and training policies to reduce accidents. The training outline provided encompassed hands on experience both over obstacle courses and at the work site, verbal training emphasizing the differences between powered industrial trucks and cars, and between sidewalk pedestrians and factory pedestrians, truck operating controls and safety devices, attachments, inspections, how to pick up a load, traveling, setting the load down, loading and unloading boxcars and highway trucks, leaving the truck, refueling and recharging, restricted use of trucks, maintenance and repair, and the handling of hazardous materials and in hazardous areas.
