Tests of Glass Plano Safety Spectacles

  Tests were made of 22 individual models of safety spectacles designed for industrial use with glass lenses which were advertised as meeting the requirements of the ANSI Z87.1 standard. A general description was offered of each test along with the results for each of the glasses. The glasses were subjected to the lens impact test, the frame impact test, the luminous transmittance test, the flammability test, the refractive power test, the flat and edge transverse test, the corrosion and disinfection test, and a water absorption test. These spectacles appeared to be in general accord with the standard requirements with the only exception being a single failure in the lens impact test. All models had high optical quality. The three tests designed to measure how well spectacles serve their basic function of eye protection from direct impact indicated that the models tested passed the lens and frame impact tests and all models with full sideshields met the eye exposure requirement. The authors stress that in no way were flatfold sideshields considered to be a substitute for full sideshields. [Description provided by NIOSH]
