• Description:
  The program plans, narratives, and projects undertaken by NIOSH in Federal Year 1985 were reviewed. National surveillance systems have been and continue to be developed to identify workplace hazards and work related injury, disability or death claims. Specific surveillance measures undertaken for mining and other industries in general were briefly noted. Specific areas of concentration for health problems included occupational lung diseases, musculoskeletal injuries, occupational cancers, severe occupational traumatic injuries, disorders of reproduction, neurotoxic disorders, noise induced loss of hearing, dermatologic conditions, psychological disorders and cardiovascular diseases. Evaluations of possible hazardous working conditions have involved measurements of exposures to various substances, measurements of indoor air quality, evaluations of hazardous waste sites, and the designing of better methods for controlling the exposure levels.
