A Worker’s Guide to NIOSH

  This guide for the worker provides information on the function and programs of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). NIOSH was established to investigate health and safety hazards based on requests for such studies received from various work places. Once hazards were identified and evaluated, recommendations were put forth for easing those situations where risks were deemed to be present. No authority existed within NIOSH for issuing citations or fines for violations of safety procedures. NIOSH was able to investigate causes of workplace illness and accidents not only for on the spot evaluations but for long term follow up as well. NIOSH also evaluated sampling and measurement methods to determine their appropriateness for the hazards in question. Questions which workers should consider when evaluating their place of work for possible safety hazards were listed. Ways in which NIOSH could help the individual to improve the safety conditions around him were noted. Addresses are listed for NIOSH regional offices and other NIOSH facilities.
