Description:The assistance of farm owners, managers, agricultural workers, and equipment manufacturers in the prevention of electrocutions while moving metal grain augers was requested by NIOSH. A total of five fatalities occurred in two accidents while farm workers were using grain augers. In each case the workers were using the equipment in an elevated position, moving it from one location to another, when the machine came into contact with overhead power lines, resulting in electrocution for the five men. The information gathered in the cases suggests there was a basic lack of recognition of the existing hazard which accounts for the failure of the workers to lower the grain augers to the horizontal position before moving them to other locations. NIOSH recommends that a survey of farms be undertaken to identify hazards due to overhead electrical lines. When all such hazards are identified and documented for future reference, workers should be informed of their location and instructed in steps necessary to safely move grain augers. Manufacturers of grain augers are urged to consider design modifications that will prevent grain augers from being moved while in an elevated position. It is also recommended that users and manufactures of grain augers affix safety signs on the equipment that warn the user of the potential hazards of moving the auger in its upright position.
