Description:Tests of commercially available linemen's rubber insulating gloves presumed to meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards were conducted by NIOSH. Twelve of 155 available models were selected for testing. Gloves were subjected to tests specified by the ANSI standard. A series of packaging, marking, and dimensional tests were conducted. Tests evaluating the electrical resistance properties of the gloves were also conducted. Finally, physical tests evaluating tensile strength and elongation before and after accelerated aging, and tension set tests were performed. In general, the gloves tested were in compliance with standards although all but one model failed at least one of the packaging and dimensional tests. All models passed the tension set and elongation tests, two models failed the tensile strength test, and one failed the electrical tests. The two models failing the tensile strength test were not constructed of the material required by the ANSI standard; one of these models as labeled as complying with the standard. The improperly labeled model also failed the electrical tests. The authors conclude that commercially available linemen's rubber insulating gloves are generally in compliance with the performance requirements of the standard. Compliance with performance criteria are problems which probably can be eliminated by better process controls. [Description provided by NIOSH]
