  Standards for protective gloves used by firefighters (SIC-9224) are presented. Data on hand and wrist injuries among firefighters is presented along with general criteria for protective gloves, such as resistance to mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electrical damage. Existing glove standards are evaluated and deficiencies related to glove materials and styles are noted. New standards are proposed for glove classification, material, and performance. A prototype three component glove system is described, and test data on flame resistance and liquid penetration characteristics of various glove materials is included. [Description provided by NIOSH]
