Description:Dust control systems in the picker and garnett rooms of the cotton yarn manufacturing operations (SIC-2281) at the Atlantic Federal Penitentiary were assessed. Total dust levels were measured in both the picker and garnett rooms with a portable dust monitor. Standard vertical elutriators were used to take samples over a period of several days for approximately 5 hours per day. Samples were generally collected in areas around the workers. All filters were weighed before sampling and analyzed gravimetrically following sampling. Duct air velocities were also measured. Average levels of 250 and 640 micrograms per cubic meter of elutriated dust were recorded in the picker and garnett rooms, respectively. The authors conclude that the picker room dust control system is effective and operates according to its specifications. The garnetting room dust control system, provides adequate protection, but cannot achieve the same level of efficiency as the picker dust control system. Recommendations include reducing the frequency and rate of filter cleaning in both systems, performing of filter efficiency tests, and redesigning of the garnetting dust capture system for increased capture efficiency.
