Description:A guide is presented for the establishment of occupational safety and health (OSH) programs in schools that include vocational education curricula. Administrative and technical or regulatory guidelines are described, along with a self evaluation instrument for use in making periodic hazard inspections. The administrative guidelines contain information on general characteristics of OSH programs, OSH committees, employee cooperation, emergency plans, OSH maintenance, and the handling of machine and hand tools. The technical or regulatory guidelines review regulatory or general conditions and operations, including walking and working surfaces, ladders, industrial stairs, standard guardrails and toeboards, scaffolds, safety belts, lifelines, lanyards, nets, excavating and trenching, and exits and exit markings. The guidelines also consider occupational health and environmental controls for noise exposure, ventilation, chemical handling, entry to confined spaces, harmful materials and practices, hazardous materials, spray painting, and personal protective equipment. Other topics covered include medical and first aid, fire protection, compressed air equipment, materials handling and storage, machinery and machine guarding, requirements for woodworking equipment, hand and portable powered tools, welding, cutting, brazing, and the National Electric Code.
