Description:NIOSH sponsored industrial hygiene surveys were carried out in two unidentified chemical plants in the eastern U.S. to determine the extent of occupational exposure to benzyl-chloride (100447). The workplace, job type, and industrial practices involved in the production of benzyl-chloride are described. Sixty full shift personal monitoring samples were taken to document exposure to benzyl-chloride. It was found that all but one of the 60 samples were in the range 0.01 to 0.14ppm. Short term personal monitoring samples taken in the benzyl-chloride manufacturing facility and during drum load procedures ranged from 0.02 to 0.27ppm. Based on observations made during the surveys and results of the air samples, conclusions are drawn and recommendations for improvements made. [Description provided by NIOSH]
