Report of Electromagnetic Radiation Surveys of Video Display Terminals

  Data from a 1977 NIOSH survey of electromagnetic radiation hazards from several models and types of video display terminals (VDT) are reported, along with the results of medical examinations of exposed workers. The survey was requested by the Newspaper Guild and a prominent newspaper facility, after the presence of bilateral cataracts were noticed in newspaper employees using VDTs. Many VDT operators had complained of diverse physiological symptoms, but no specific occupationally induced disease has been documented that implicates VDT as a causative agent. The etiology of the two employees' cataracts remained undetermined and could not be connected to VDT exposure. The VDT equipment typically used in the communication field is described. The value is measured for X-ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, and radiofrequency radiation emissions were considerably below current threshold limit values or standards and did not represent an occupational hazard to the eyes. Additional data from previous surveys by NIOSH and others are referenced which confirm the indicated finding. [Description provided by NIOSH]
