• Description:
  A guide to aid arc and gas welders in identifying health and safety hazards, and to assist employers in training employees in the health and safety hazards of these processes is presented. A training format and instruction techniques are presented. Subject areas covered are comprehensive worksite preparation including clearing walls and floors and erection of protective shields. Equipment check for each process as well as methods of installation and preparation of materials to be cut are presented. Fire protection should include fire extinguishers and fire watchers. Various health hazards, types of exposure and route of agent entry are discussed. Environmental control by ventilation of various methods is essential. Methods of personal protection by various apparatuses are stressed. Welding techniques and specific requirements for ventilation and respiratory protective equipment are given. First aid techniques are shown and safety and health considerations including confined spaces, labels, and general work practices are discussed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
