Environmental Surveys of Aluminum Reduction Plants

  Summary of the environmental surveys of four aluminum reduction plants in the Eastern United States, including pre-baked anode pots horizontal pin soderberg anode pots, and vertical pin soderberg anode pots, and cryolite and carbon plant operations. Data are given for the extent of worker exposures to potential carcinogenic compounds found in coal tar and petroleum pitch volatiles, and for exposures to total airborne dust, airborne fluorides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, ammonia and noise. Aluminum reduction processing and associated worker activities are described, with the environmental sampling procedures utilized, sampling results, and conclustions that can be drawn from the surveys.
