Description:Geologic mapping and mineral exploration in the proposed Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska, have been superficial. Large parts of the area lack even the most preliminary and basic types of surveys. The Bureau of Mines undertook a three-phase program to (1) compile a list of known mineral occurrences and prospects within the withdrawal lands, (2) to sample, map, and evaluate as many of the more promising prospects as possible with the funds and time available, and (3) to summarize the results of the fieldwork and identify areas favorable for future mineral exploration. Further exploration was done to search for additional data and to identify areas where additional field investigations were essential. [Description provided by NIOSH]
