Description:In 1987, the U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated a mineral assessment of the 5.7-million-acre Valdez Creek Mining District. Following a literature search and interview with persons knowledgeable about deposits within the district, limited on-site field visits were made to various deposits. Present within the district are the industrial minerals limestone, argillite, granite, basalt, perlite, zeolite, and sand and gravel. At least six limestone deposits of potentially economic size and grade are known to exist within the district. Adjacent to the parks highway and marginal to the district, a limestone deposit is currently being mined as a source of agricultural lime. A perlite occurrence near Yacko Creek was evaluated but proved not to be of industrial grade. The sand and gravel resources of the district are vast, but high silt content renders many glacial deposits unsuitable for use in construction applications. [Description provided by NIOSH]
