Description:This report discusses in general terms scheduled inspection and preventative maintenance of the hoists and ancillary equipment described in volume 1. Preventative scheduled inspection and maintenance procedures assist in the smooth operation of mine hoisting systems by the prevention of unscheduled or catastrophic equipment failure and its attendant downtime. Schedules and overall maintenance planning are required at the management level. Inspection, maintenance, and unusual operations or incidents must be recorded in records and equipment logs. A cross reference between MSHA regulations and various equipment components is included as part of the report. A discussion of the various nondestructive testing methods that may be applied to hoisting equipment is also included. [Description provided by NIOSH]
