Description:This guide considers nine of the many wire rope terminations used in the mining industry, thus use of the information presented for terminations not specifically addressed can be done, but with some risk. The guide uses pull test data, axial fatigue test data, and data on sensitivity to poor manufacturing to rank the terminations with respect to these performance measures. A selection procedure is suggested and illustrated with an example. Failure data are used to identify the common modes of failure of each termination and thus help direct attention toward the likely location for a failure and a projection of what should be looked for. The data on which this guide is based are included so that as new data become available, the ranking order can be adjusted accordingly. [Description provided by NIOSH]
