Description:Haulage accidents, one of the largest sources of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines, have been increasing during the past few years. A study was conducted to derive preventive measures that might obviate the hazardous conditions and unsafe acts. In-mine surveys were made in 35 underground coal mines in 10 different coal seams that were believed to be representative of U.S. mines. Operations were observed in all areas of underground transportation, including about 90 sections. At each mine, interviews were held with mine personnel to obtain basic data and to provide information on operations that were difficult to observe. The survey data were analyzed and correlated.
