Description:Techniques were developed and demonstrated for extinguishing coal mine fires by remote sealing of underground passageways. The system is versatile enough to function under a wide range of conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passageway. The system includes instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction.
