Description:Selecting and defining target related conditions for surveillance under the Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks (SENSOR) system was discussed. SENSOR was intended to serve as a model for state based surveillance programs. The historic role of the Centers for Disease Control in selecting target conditions for SENSOR was discussed. The role of NIOSH in selecting targeted conditions for SENSOR was considered. Criteria used to select the initial list of target conditions for SENSOR were reviewed. These included establishing that the work related condition is of national importance, the condition can be attributed to work on an individual basis, the condition has a short to medium latency, the condition is not under surveillance through other data sources, the condition is potentially reversible, and a feasible preventive strategy for the condition is available. Epidemiologic case definitions and reporting guidelines for SENSOR were reviewed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
