Description:A study was conducted to determine whether compliance with the respirable dust standard equally limited the thoracic dust exposure of all miners. Measurements were taken of the size distributions of dusts on three longwall and three continuous mining sections. The results of the study indicated that compliance with the respirable dust standard would not equally limit the thoracic dust exposure of all mine workers. Assuming a respirable dust level of 2mg/m3, the thoracic dust level in the same area would range from 3 to 14mg/m3, depending on the location in the mine. Therefore, the authors conclude that respirable dust exposures may not be the best predictor of bronchitic symptoms and reduced pulmonary function. The authors recommend that the thoracic/respirable dust ratios determined for this study be supplemented with additional personal sampling to develop estimated thoracic/respirable dust ratios for specific underground occupations.
