Description:Highlights of the Third International Symposium on Agrochemicals were presented. The symposium, held in Saskatchewan, Canada, in May, 1992 was organized by the Center for Agricultural Medicine, the University of Saskatchewan, NIOSH, and the Scientific Committee on Occupational Health in Agriculture of the International Commission on Occupational Health. Major areas of presentations were listed. In the area of respiratory disorders, topics including the roles of interleukin-1 and bronchoalveolar lavage, lowering of Canadian standards of grain dust exposure, and occupational asthma. Other specific topics noted were research linking cholinesterase inhibiting insecticide exposure with asthma, obstructive lung disease in animal confinement workers, and excessive injuries and deaths among farm workers. Causes and preventive measures in the reduction of farm accidents, and occupational hearing loss and rehabilitation for injured farmers were considered. Discussions of pesticide usage centered on assessment of biological dose, chronic disorders and exposure and acute poisoning. Association of Parkinson's disease with pesticide use, Parkinson like symptoms with carbon-disulfide (75150) fumigation, birth defects with atrazine (1912249) containing well water, cigarette smoking and farming with cancer of the lip, and rare tumors with farm residence, farming or pesticide exposure were mentioned as further symposium topics.
