Description:Studies were conducted using two different dustiness testers at two facilities where powders were packed into bags and at two facilities where powders were emptied from bags. The two dustiness test devices used were the Heubach Dust Measurement Appliance and the Midwest Research Institute (MRI) tester. Evidence was obtained of a relationship between dustiness test results and dust exposures at one bag dumping and one bag filling facility. Regression analysis in one case demonstrated that dust exposures can be predicted to within nearly one order of magnitude. The variability in this prediction was caused by the inherent variability in the occupational dust exposures. Evidence of a correlation after the data had been adjusted for the effect of varying drop height was found in the results from another operation analysis. In the remaining two investigations, no correlation was observed between dust exposures and dustiness test results. The authors conclude that the relevance of dustiness tests to occupational dust exposure should be evaluated at each test site. [Description provided by NIOSH]
