Successful reduction of silica exposures at a sanitary ware pottery

Description:A study was conducted on the levels of exposure of workers at a sanitary ware pottery factory to silica (14808607) dust and the effectiveness of subsequently implemented protective measures. Area and personal samples for respirable dust were collected at a sanitary ware pottery factory before and after the implementation of recommended protective measures. The range of geometric means of respirable crystalline silica in personal samples was 130 to 220 micrograms/cubic meter with the highest level seen in glaze sprayers. The range in area samples was between 73 and 250 micrograms/cubic meter, with the highest level seen in the slip house department. All of the personal samples exceeded the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Level of 50 micrograms/cubic meter as a time weighted average as did all of the samples from the slip house and glaze preparation areas, 88% of the samples from casting areas, and 66% of samples from glaze spraying areas. Following the installation of control measures such as automation and enclosure, the use of alternative materials, and improved housekeeping and exhaust ventilation, dramatic reductions in the level of exposure to crystalline silica were seen in all personal and area samples with the exception of personal samples from workers in the glaze preparation department.
