Silicosis surveillance in New Jersey: targeting workplaces using occupational disease and exposure surveillance data

Description:A comparison was made of the four digit Standard Industrial Classifications (SICs) identified by the National Occupational Exposure Survey (NOES), a New Jersey silicosis case registry, and regulatory agency compliance inspections made in New Jersey. The case registry for New Jersey identified 567 individuals with a diagnosis of silicosis. Among these three data sources, 204 SICs were identified in New Jersey with potential silica (14808607) exposure on the job. Of these 204 SICs, 45% were identified by NOES only, 16% by registry cases only, and 6% by compliance inspections only. Of the 204, 33% were identified by two or more of the data sources. NOES identified a total of 159 four digit SICs with exposure potentially to quartz, silica flour, sand, or flint. In New Jersey there were 151 four digit SICs comprising companies, cases and/or workers in that SIC. The authors conclude that one of the first steps to be taken in planning silicosis prevention programs is to identify workplaces where the potential for silica exposure exists.
