  In this letter to the editor (by Rinsky, Hornung and Landrigan), questions were raised concerning the titled review paper in which the reviewers criticized the epidemiological risk assessment procedure set forth in their paper. Neither the reviewers nor the authors of the original paper were considered to differ in their conclusions that there is a link between benzene (71432) exposure and the incidence of leukemia as derived through epidemiological research. The criticism centered on the use of a nested case/control study as opposed to basing the likelihood of leukemia occurring in persons exposed to benzene on a stratification of person years from the entire cohort involved in the study. After reviewing various problems concerned with epidemiological research, the current writers call for a formal assessment of the possible etiologic association between benzene and lymphoma. A response was also included from the authors of the review article (Austin, Delzell and Cole) explaining the reasons for this lack of confidence in the risk assessments obtained from the research, and comparing these findings with those of others in the field.
