Physical and biological aerosol penetration and face-seal leak characteristics of industrial and health-care respirators

Description:Research comparing the ability of surgical masks and industrial dust/mist respirators to protect against submicrometer sized aerosol particles and bacteria was summarized. Filter penetration varied from 20% to 100% for surgical masks and was less for industrial respirators. Face seal leaks produced higher mask aerosol penetration in industrial masks due to the higher pressure drop across the mask. Surgical mask protection was less affected by face seal leaks. New respirator testing methods were cited which differentiate air flow from face seal links and air flow through filters. Spherically shaped test particles gave lower measurements of aerosol penetration than tests using challenge bacteria. The authors conclude that surgical masks provide insufficient protection from submicrometer size aerosols encountered in hospital environments. [Description provided by NIOSH]
