Peripheral nerve abnormalities in aging rats

Details

  • Personal Author:
  • Description:
Ultrastructural abnormalities found in sciatic, tibial and plantar nerves of rats from 3 months to 2.5 years of age were investigated. Morphological abnormalities were evident in all the nerves examined regardless of whether the animals had been housed on wire mesh or on smooth floors. The degree and proximal spread of abnormality increased as a function of age and body weight. Aberrant findings were encountered with increasing frequency on descent from the sciatic to the tibial nerve in the lower hindlimb, being most prominent in the lateral and medial plantar nerves. Contorted and infolded myelin sheaths were noted on most of the plantar nerve fibers. Myelinated fibers with a corrugated surface and deeply infolded myelin sheath were common. Normal and abnormal configurations of unmyelinated fibers were also found including fibers with redundant cytoplasmic processes, reduplicated basal lamina, or encircling supernumerary Schwann cell processes. Collagen and elastin fibers were prominent in the endoneurial compartment. Endoneurial cells other than fibroblasts or mast cells were found sometimes adjacent to nerve fibers or blood vessels. The authors concluded that the abnormalities encountered in the sciatic, tibial and plantar nerves of aging rodents must be considered when evaluating the results of a long term experiment.
