Performance of laboratories analyzing organic solvents in the Proficiency Analytical Testing program

  The analysis of organic solvents under the NIOSH Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program was described, and the performance of laboratories in the PAT program was evaluated. Changes in the production of samples containing organic solvents since 1974 were discussed. Some solvents were used in only a few rounds and were dropped from the program. Methods of preparation of the charcoal tubes were changed, and different laboratories prepared them. As permissible exposure limits, recommended exposure limits and threshold limit values for individual solvents have changed, loadings have been changed. Changes in variability over time by analyte were investigated for the eight organic solvents used in the highest number of rounds in the program. The total variability, interanalyst variability and intraanalyst variability were reduced in the later years of the program, compared to the early years (1974 to 1980) for organic solvents. The authors conclude that improvements in PAT performance for organic solvents may have been the result of improvements in gas chromatography instrumentation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
