Description:A study was conducted in an attempt to identify hazards present in small industry. Comprehensive consultations and site visits were conducted in 141 small industries in Colorado and health and safety hazards were grouped using an OSHA standard. A Crude Hazard Rate (CHR), expressed as the number of hazards identified per 100 employees, was calculated for each facility. Overall, an average of 11.7 serious hazards were identified per visit. Of the three types of industries examined, construction, manufacturing, and trades and services, the greatest number of serious hazards identified per visit and the greatest CHR were found in the manufacturing industry. The OSHA hazards identified most often in the manufacturing industry included electrical hazards, deficiencies in the hazard communication program, hazards associated with means of egress, and machinery, hand, and power tool hazards. The highest hazard ratings in the trades and services industries were associated with deficiencies in hazard communications programs and electrical hazards. In the construction industry, hazards included walking and working surfaces, electrical, housekeeping, welding/brazing, and machinery, tools, and grinding hazards.
