Description:Programs which have become a part of the general working environment and were designed to assist in either health promotion activities or health protection endeavors were discussed. Health protection involved the reduction in health and safety risks from hazardous working conditions, by engineering control measures, while health promotion was intended to change worker behaviors and habits to reduce the risk of disease and injury. Programs with government or legislative support were described. The actions and responsibilities of the workers and the management team were delineated. Benefits which may be gained by following such a program at the work site were noted and ideas for initiating such programs were provided. Specific examples were given for miners with the occupational health risk of lung cancer and the lifestyle risk of smoking, construction workers with job accidents and alcohol abuse, warehouse workers with musculoskeletal disorders and poor physical fitness, and prison guards with psychological disorders and poor stress coping techniques.
