Description:An improved air sample processing technique and an ultrasensitive, two site immunoradiometric assay were developed for measuring papain (9001734) in personal breathing zone samples by using conventional industrial hygiene air sampling equipment. A total of 20 personal breathing zone and 20 general area air samples were collected on polytetrafluoroethylene membrane filters. Papain was detected in each sample taken, indicating airborne exposure levels of 450 and 600 nanograms/cubic meter (ng/m3). Eighteen workers who manually bagged meat products were exposed to 220 to 1700ng/m3. General area air monitoring results demonstrated airborne papain in the compounding room and at all sampled locations on the production floor. About half the airborne papain was found in particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 9 micrometers. The authors indicate that efforts made to improve the engineering controls or operating conditions should be followed with consistent monitoring of airborne levels of papain.
