Description:The levels of exposure of street sweeper operators to silica (14808607) and asbestos (1332214) were investigated. Sweepers were selected randomly from several municipalities. Air samples were collected inside the sweeper cabs during summer and winter. During the summer, respirable dust concentrations ranged from the limit of detection to 0.4mg/m3. Quartz concentrations ranged from the limit to 0.05mg/m3. Respirable dust concentrations in the winter sampling ranged as high as 27mg/m3 with quartz concentrations from the limit to 0.2 mg/m3. Dust loading on the filters prevented determination of asbestos concentrations in samples collected during the winter. The study indicated that exposures increased in the winter time and that some sweepers were exposed to significant quantities of airborne silica after sanding operations.
