Description:Measurements were taken of the dust and rat urinary aeroallergen (RUA) concentrations in three research institutions as part of an epidemiological study to explore a possible relation between occupational exposure to laboratory animals and laboratory animal allergy. RUA exposure assessment used to provide exposure estimates for a longitudinal prospective epidemiological study were described. Personal RUA exposure measurements were taken in nine exposure groups over a workshift. The highest exposure was observed for animal technicians showing a geometric mean of 32.4 micrograms/cubic meter and lowest for workers in slide production and office. Except for slide production workers, contact with rats, their tissues, feces, or urine comprised less than half the work shift. Exposure during contact with rats was considerably higher. Personal RUA measurements in nine task categories showed high RUA concentrations for handling rats and cleaning out cages. Traces of RUA could be measured in tearooms inside and near offices outside the animal houses. Total dust concentrations were relatively low. [Description provided by NIOSH]
