Description:An evaluation was conducted of of the solid sorbent sampling and analytical procedure used to determine alveolar methylene-chloride (75092) (MC) and the bag sampling and analytical technique used to determine alveolar carbon-monoxide (630080) (CO). These evaluations included studies of the recovery of MC from the charcoal cloth solid sorbent and a comparison by linear regression of the post exposure blood concentrations of MC and carboxyhemoglobin, respectively, to alveolar concentrations of MC and CO. The results of the study indicated that a three section, charcoal cloth sorbent device for sampling alveolar MC in tandem with a bag for sampling alveolar CO was a useful alternative to sampling venous blood for MC and carboxyhemoglobin. Post shift alveolar breath concentrations of MC and CO obtained from 14 furniture strippers using the tandem sampler were reasonably correlated with post shift venous blood concentrations of MC and carboxyhemoglobin, respectively. An in- vivo MC blood/gas partition coefficient of 16.7 was higher than the reported in-vitro value of 9.7. However, the breath concentrations may have been lower than predicted due to the fact that post shift breath was always sampled after blood. The slope of the line determined by linear regression of the breath CO and blood carboxyhemoglobin data was comparable to that estimated from the Haldane equation or those reported in the literature. A major source of error was the electrochemical detector used for determining breath CO. The solid sorbent sampler had adequate capacity for post shift breath MC concentrations ranging from 7 to 540 micrograms/liter. Trace levels of MC corresponding to 1.4 to 18 micrograms/liter were observed in preshift samples. [Description provided by NIOSH]
