Ergonomics efforts in the retail food industry

  This report presented the results of a panel discussion which involved individuals from retail, ergonomic consulting firms, equipment manufacturers, and NIOSH, each of whom was currently involved with ergonomic efforts in the retail food industry. Specific topics addressed included a retailer's perspective of ergonomics in supermarkets, the role of the consultant in retail workstation ergonomics, the push for change arising from ergonomics consulting in the supermarket industry, practical applications for retail distribution centers, and ergonomic assessments in the food distribution industry. Several of the recommendations offered by the panelists included making improvements in administration such as reducing pick hours, instituting increased rest breaks, improving staffing, and allowing reasonable time and motion expectations along with job rotation. Other recommendations dealt with providing medical management improvements such as supplying nurses on site, identifying restricted duty jobs, encouraging the early reporting of symptoms, providing adequate training, improving the work practices and conditions, using personal protective equipment, changing the products being handled, and changing the design of the warehouse and practices in place there.
