Description:The gross and histologic effects of methoxychlor (72435) exposure on the reproductive system were investigated in female CD-1-mice. Mice were administered methoxychlor at dose levels of 1.25, 2.5, or 5.0mg/kg via oral gavage for 5 consecutive days each week for 2 or 4 weeks. Mice were sacrificed 24 hours after the final exposure. Control groups were administered 0.025 milligrams estradiol-17beta or vehicle. Analysis indicated that a dose dependent persistent vaginal estrus was induced in methoxychlor exposed animals. The ovaries of the exposed animals weighed significantly less than those of controls. An increase was also noted in the number of atretic large follicles in the control group exposed to estrogen-17beta and in the mice treated with the two highest dose levels of methoxychlor. This finding indicated a potential reduction in the immediate fertility of the animal. The authors conclude that this chemical appears to mimic very closely the effects on the female reproductive system induced by estrogens.
