Disabling injuries to childcare workers in Minnesota, 1985 to 1990. An analysis of potential risk factors

    A study was conducted to determine the incidence, types, and severity of worker injuries in childcare centers and to identify variables potentially associated with these injuries. Data were obtained from the Minnesota Department of Jobs and Training (data pertinent to the populations of childcare center workers for each year of the study) and from the Minnesota Department of Labor (all case files relevant to reported injuries incurred by childcare workers for each year of the study). A total of 440 childcare center worker injury cases were identified from 1985 through 1990. The mean age for these workers was 32, with women accounting for 93% of the cases. The overall injury rate for the 6 year period was 1.09 per 100 workers. Little variation in rates by year, which ranged between 0.92 and 1.24 per 100 workers, was identified. Injuries to the back accounted for the greatest proportion, 34%. Injuries to the lower (20%) and upper (12%) extremities, as well as multiple site injuries (13%) were the next most frequently reported. Sprains accounted for 48% of all injuries. Other types included burns (1%), contusions (7%), cuts (4%), dislocations (6%), fractures (7%), joint inflammation (1%), and multiple injuries (3%). Another person was involved in the injury events most frequently (30%), while work surfaces, including floors and stairs, accounted for 20% of the injuries. Overexertion was reported in 34% of the cases. Falls were the second most commonly reported mechanism, accounting for 21%. The authors suggest that to protect childcare workers adequately, additional policies and regulations will be required as will further study in this area. [Description provided by NIOSH]
