Description:Sampling and analytical methods were developed for organophosphorus compounds in air, using gas chromatography/flame photometric detection. A convenient sampler for compounds which may exist in air as both aerosols and vapors was the filter/sorbent tube sampler known as the OSHA versatile sampler (OVS). Organophosphorus compounds were selected for testing based on toxicity, use, and exposure limit values. Desorption efficiency, sampler capacity for sampling times, sample stability, precision, and accuracy were determined for 19 organophosphorus pesticides. Preliminary studies indicated some of the compounds were not stable on the glass fiber filters. Quartz fiber filters provided stable recoveries for all compounds. Desorption of the compounds from both the filter and sorbent were optimized with the use of 10% acetone in toluene. Recovery was greater than 80%. None of the 19 demonstrated breakthrough into the backup sorbent bed even after drawing air through at 1 liter/minute. All compounds were stable in the sampler for 30 days. All of the organophosphorus compounds could be determined over the range of 0.1 to 2 times the exposure limit with an accuracy of +/-25% of the true value. [Description provided by NIOSH]
