Description:The feasibility of development of a mathematical model for predicting concentrations of small fibers based on phase contrast concentrations was investigated. Such a model would not be intended as a substitute for electron microscopy, as the model could not achieve the accuracy and precision of the electron microscope. The utility of the model would be in estimating small fiber concentrations in future epidemiological studies where the only concentration information was phase contrast counts of fibers over 5 micrometers in length. Development of the predictive model required conditions be performed on the fiber distributions of both phase contrast (PC) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) counts. A significant correlation was noted between the log-e of the SEM concentration which allowed a regression equation to be developed. The model was used to predict SEM concentrations from phase contrast concentrations. The mean percentage error was plus or minus 41.5 percent. For a given phase contrast concentration, the SEM concentration can be predicted. It appeared from the results of this study that the use of this predictive model to estimate SEM concentration from phase contrast concentration was not a viable approach at this time.
