Description:A survey of extremely low frequency magnetic field (MF) exposure was undertaken of 81 workers in a large automatic transmission factory for a case/control study examining the relationship between the occurrence of primary brain cancer and MF exposure. Employees were chosen for MF measurement from job titles representative of jobs held by subjects in the case/control study. Each worker wore a monitoring instrument for half of a shift. Exposure indices corresponding to various potential biological mechanisms were calculated for each worker. Average exposures ranged from 0.16 to 46 milligauss (mG), and the median exposure was 1.3mG. Nonparametric correlation coefficients were computed to assess the degree of association between exposure indices. A moderate relationship between the selected indices of central tendency and right tail size were observed, while stronger correlations were seen between indices sensitive to the right tail size. Overall, the correlation coefficients within worker exposure indices were neither very high nor very low. A lognormal model showed that the observed indices significantly exceeded those predicted by the model for 47% of the workers, indicating that lognormality might not be reliable for estimating distributions of short term exposures among individuals.
