Assessment of azinphosmethyl exposure in California peach harvest workers

  Peach harvest workers exposed to azinphosmethyl (86500) were studied during the harvest season to evaluate the utility of several measures of exposure. The 20 study subjects were employed by a peach grower in Sutter County, California. Azinphosmethyl had been applied 30 days prior to data collection to the study orchards at a rate of 1.5 pounds active ingredient per acre. The subjects worked in the orchards 21 days over the next 6 weeks. Plasma cholinesterase (P-ChE) and erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (RBC-AChE) activities, oxime induced P-ChE reactivation, and urinary azinphosmethyl metabolites were measured. Dermal and environmental exposures were assessed. Dislodgeable foliar residues ranged from 0.3 to 0.96 microgram/square centimeter. The biomarkers were correlated with each subject's work activities, measurements of azinphosmethyl and its oxon metabolite from environmental samples, and levels collected from dermal exposure matrices. Median reduction in RBC-AChE activity was 7% over the initial 3 day period of exposure and 19% over the 6 week season. The most sensitive indicators of recent exposure were urinary metabolites, and these correlated moderately with dermal and clothing levels. A good correlation was obtained between urinary metabolites and RBC-AChE drawn 3 days after exposure started. There was no significant oxime induced reactivation [Description provided by NIOSH]
