Description:A method was developed for the high speed gas chromatographic determination of the volatile aromatic compounds located in ground water which had become contaminated with gasoline (8006619). Manual, static headspace sampling was used. Retention time reproducibility of the seven peaks studied ranged from 0.25 to 0.67%. An excellent linear correlation was obtained for plots of either peak height or peak area against the concentration of the compounds. The results obtained from this analysis were compared with the results of three replicate samples of gasoline contaminated water using high speed gas chromatography, by two field portable gas chromatographs and by a laboratory based gas chromatograph. The amount of water vapor present in the vapor used for static headspace sampling produced no observable effect either on the injection systems or the chromatographic performance of the high speed gas chromatograph.
